For me, the value of a favicon is: simple, looking nice at the size, recognizable among others, related to the visual language of the site…

…I’m gravitating toward the border since it feels the right amount of simple/abstract to me, plus it’s tied together with one of the most prominent visual elements on the page. Having said that, I didn’t prototype it, so I trust you to do what feels right to you.
