Yeah, those function keys between alpha and Enter seem literally wedged in.

TI Silent 700 might have been the first appearance in the ASCII world? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_700#/media/File:Silent-700.jpg …

So, wait. List of major keyboard battles: · one Shift/four rows vs. two Shifts/three rows · Ctrl vs Caps Lock · numeric keypad orientation · QWERTY vs. Dvorak · bit-paired vs. typewriter Did I forget anything?

• Manual vs electric is not quite the same as bit-paired vs typewriter • [] and {} keys vs [{ and ]} keys? • Sequence for linearized arrow keys? • Where does \ go?

Interesting! These don’t seem as much battles as natural progression, but I don’t really even know what the definition of “battle” is. :·) “Sequence for linearized arrow keys” is interesting. There’s no continuity here in my head, but maybe I need to look closer.

I wonder if people hated the electric layout when it first came around! There was no Twitter.

I wish I had easy access to Typewriter Topics to read the letters to the editor

I guess linearized arrow keys are basically dead now except for HJKL ←↓↑→ in vi. But I grew up with Apple II's ←→↓↑, while contemporary Model 100 went ←→↑↓

The IBM PC world seemed to be unsettled for a long time in the 1980s about whether \ should go next to Z or = or [] or somewhere else

I have a theory that IBM PC designers screwed the future world forever by putting 83 instead of 82 keys on the first keyboard. Now you have ISO and ANSI Enter and that never ending puzzle of having one key you don’t know where to put.
