Ah, that wasn’t mentioned in a few articles I read. (I didn’t even know that’s where the expression came from.)

It bothers me now that the “drinking the Kool-Aid” expression exists, and the contexts in which I heard it used. It seems as thoughtless as “Keep Calm and X” memes.

This book does an astounding job of boiling down Jonestown to its chronological essentials. As the author says, that phrase is wrong. The only people who survived managed to hide. Every one else either wanted to drink it or was forced. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Thousand_Lives …

And it was Flavor Aid anyway. :-) I didn’t know that til I read the book. It’s not a fun read.

I knew that but I was blanking on the exact phrase. I thought the "white night" concept was applicable here though

You have the phrase right. It’s just wrong in that it implies a complete subservience and the brand is wrong.

When I had read about what truly happened, I felt ashamed for having used that phrase and, in that, for having short handed mass murder down to a glib remark about gullibility.

I’m afraid the phrase has come to mean what it means despite whatever evidence comes to light. I hear you, though, and empathize.
