In Greenwich Village NYC, it was because the locals were not about the Randall Commission making the Manhattan on a grid because they KNEW where they lived, tyvm. So it’s a nice grid above 14th st, and the lower bit runs together.
I tour guide in that neighborhood and live in fear of losing group members every time.
