Two spacebands together was a very bad thing for the Linotype, causing squirting hot metal and machine downtime. This was likely the final nail in the coffin for extra space between sentences, and the reason two spaces are hated so intently by editors.
And for clarity, that final sentence in the last tweet is my opinion only, not from the @MOPrinting. Although Frank Romano did not completely reject the notion when I discussed it with him.
The @MOPrinting also has a very large library there that I hope to go back and spend some time in. And later tonight I'll post several more keyboard pictures I took on the off chance that they might be useful for @mwichary's book.
Two Monotype keyboards. Did they even have a standard layout? They were undated, but the second one was positioned next to a Monotype phototypesetter.pic.twitter.com/PGfL3blspR
Hammond Multiplex, 1913. Instead of typebars, it had interchangeable semi-circular shuttles with the characters, and allowed for more characters to be typed.pic.twitter.com/5UMr6VwjI4
A descendant of the above Multiplex, this Varityper also allowed for lots of characters, and produced camera-ready printed output.pic.twitter.com/NWf0Dt1n1f
Friden Justowriter. A machine that allowed typists to produce justified text. I _think_ this is a pair of machines, one to create punched tape and one to read it. It isn't clear if the punched tape was also suitable for other typesetting equipment.pic.twitter.com/TjPGGMfRFj
Three more keyboards for @mwichary and then I'm done.
Quadritek phototypesetter from Itek, 1980; CRTronic 300 CRT Phototypesetter from Linotype, 1980; Compuwriter IV Phototypesetter from Compugraphic, 1971pic.twitter.com/5l3VBqTIR4
The @MOPrinting is such a great resource there and I can't wait to go back, learn more, study from the huge library, and finally break my awful habit of saying "linnnnotype" instead of "Line-O-Type".
Thanks so much again for sharing all of these!!! All sucked into my database now. ^_^
