I went there to the @MOPrinting primarily to look at their phototypesetters and Linotype equipment, but ironically didn't get an overall picture of their older Linotype, just some details.pic.twitter.com/Z7WHb8tkNh

They have a much more modern Linotype there, an Elektron, "the fastest line casting machine in the world".pic.twitter.com/OEGKqvseZF

And this odd beast that I hadn't realized existed. The Intertype Fotosetter. One of the early phototypesetters, they simply modified their linecaster to embed film in the matrix bodies.pic.twitter.com/ebhFjBbEXp

(An egregious use of the word "simply" if there ever was one.) Most phototypesetters put the film into strips or discs. The @MOPrinting has the largest collection of phototypesetting equipment in the world.pic.twitter.com/r7DeNAcnyZ

Including this phototypesetter which read typesetting instructions from perforated tape...pic.twitter.com/D3pbyIr7ff

...and this very similar machine, a teletypesetter perforator, which created the punched tape of typesetting instructions. Note the spacebar specifically labelled as "justified space". It seems odd since this version of the typesetter doesn't seem to include other spaces.pic.twitter.com/Uek48CBBZP

This earlier teletypesetter perforator for a linecasting machine includes other sized spaces, while the spacebar drops a Linotype spaceband that expands to justify lines.pic.twitter.com/ZDqef1AmNz

Two spacebands together was a very bad thing for the Linotype, causing squirting hot metal and machine downtime. This was likely the final nail in the coffin for extra space between sentences, and the reason two spaces are hated so intently by editors.

And for clarity, that final sentence in the last tweet is my opinion only, not from the @MOPrinting. Although Frank Romano did not completely reject the notion when I discussed it with him.

The @MOPrinting also has a very large library there that I hope to go back and spend some time in. And later tonight I'll post several more keyboard pictures I took on the off chance that they might be useful for @mwichary's book.
