ADM-2 terminal from 1974. Weird to see RESET right next to your down arrow, and CTRL next to… Q. But it looks very pretty.pic.twitter.com/QxH4KpGB7d
The Vari-Typer! The classic keyboard that looks like a face. (The illusion is so strong that I feel bad for the last model, missing an eye.)pic.twitter.com/o24AVpi62T
This is by no way an endorsement of the phone itself, but Microsoft Kin Two keyboard (2010) was rather nice-looking. Plus, a smiley key!pic.twitter.com/qw94UeJbrs
Remington Starfire typewriter – both the name and the red put Olivetti Valentine to shame.pic.twitter.com/bUynBA4Lca
This seems a flawed keyboard, but I really liked the symmetry and the labels on keys rotated to face you. (This is Fountain FH101.)pic.twitter.com/SySBdumwuU
The left-hand keys are sloping the wrong way! Compare wrist positions needed for finger columns of QAZ vs. YHN. Right hand is natural (even on a normal keyboard), left hand requires a major kinked wrist.
This is something you might be interested in looking into for the book; why do almost all typing tutorials teach left hand as QAZ, WSX, EDC when the far more comfortable QAShift, WSZ, EDX columns are available?
It seems like the first typing teacher thought "first column = first finger" and worked their way from left to right. And everyone else has followed suit. Tutorials really should start with index finger columns of RFC + UJM, and work outward in each direction.
I know it wasn’t one teacher. It took over a decade for this to stabilize, and – like many things – it sort of happened in a very messy way.
I think ultimately it wouldn’t matter much. For most typists, especially today, the difference might be negligible.
(Most people sort of fake touch typing anyway, and they do it their own imperfect way.)
And if you suffer from actual musculoskeletal problems, I found there are dozens of more important issues to deal with first.
