Fun and easier and you learn (some) things and you get everywhere quicker.

I often think of onramps. One can start from scratch on a hard project, or first do a few smaller projects that teach parts of the big one.

Making a bitmap font seems like that to me. (Also, modifying an existing font, or adding new ligatures or alternates, etc.)
