@enf @WideSpacer Is there a good answer as to why Carriage Return was independent from Line Feed in early teletypes?

The later rationale is clearer: carriage return takes a long time, so send it first and it can complete during the line feed

Yeah, I read that sometimes you were advised to send a no-op (LTRS) after CR to account for slowness of the machine on the other side.

But a unified CR/LF would solve this problem, too? I assume they were decoupled just for mechanical simplicity, but curious.
