With the layout I'm talking about, the F keys were to the left of the normal ones, arranged in two columns.

F6 & F7 were on the same row, next to each other. It was easy to keep your left hand's fingers over them while resting on the keyboard.

So, while debugging, you could very easily press F6 ot F7 for Step/Trace - the basic debugging commands.

The first debuggers had Step/Trace mapped to these two keys for this very reason. Nowadays this is still the case for debuggers.

But nowadays the F keys are at the top and it is VERY inconvenient to keep your fingers over them - your hand must be in the air, tiresome.

Plus, now your hand covers the keyboard, which is an additional inconvenience. Man, I miss the old layout...

Ah, yes, my mistake. It was F7/F8 that were for Step/Trace. They were next to each other on that layout.

Got it, yes! Same with F5/F6 for Copy/Move in Norton Commander.
