The layout of the NA keyboard (e.g. @ on 2 key instead of " on 2 key as in Europe), in my research, seems to have started with the Selectric

Prior to that, keyboards in NA were the same as in the UK, with the " still on the 2 key (e.g. as you can see in a Commodore 64).

…yes; AFAIU many home computers evolved from teletype keyboards (see also: Ctrl), big “office” computers from electric typewriters.

And the office computers won, spreading their keyboards to other areas.
