Nice find, but can the citation be right? That patent is for a 4-bit encoding of digits. I think this is really Carroll in 1934pic.twitter.com/iwA8TVAqVp

You might enjoy these two other patents that I just rediscovered, that contain full dumps of the character generator ROMspic.twitter.com/g7X7YW9opY

I think the real Peirce alphabetic punch patent is probably https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/6f/14/09/a27ac1fe893e02/US998631.pdf … (which I think is new to me)pic.twitter.com/qMlxqr9uJt

He apparently also had another dead-end 6-bit code that I don't think I've seen before https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/aa/4a/e6/da3e4fc107d814/US1506381.pdf …pic.twitter.com/Awyf9WVFrG

Or actually I'm not sure which is earlier. This sure beats trying to find patent sources on microfilm though

Wow, the numeric keypad in that one is unlike any other, although it makes some mechanical sense, I suppose.pic.twitter.com/T8tLhbZ511

It’s kind of amazing he wanted to remove the *letter*.

You can sort of see him struggling with figuring out, torn between the world of letters and the world of digits…pic.twitter.com/D4HRKAxaw7

Probably hadn't really thought about alphabetic sorting? Knew they needed to sort numbers, but were only concerned with printing letters

So if the output looked OK, it didn't matter if the O was internally a 0 or the I was really a 1
