Can't say that I did, but typesetting machines and/or by typewriters are the obvious candidates.
That said, the Linotype (and, I imagine, the Monotype too) did have some vulgar fractions built into its keyboard. It's a good question!
In fact, I was going to ask you a similar question: have you come across any evidence that soft keyboards have influenced the rise of emoji?
Hmmm. I haven't dug into that quite yet. There are so many ways to enter emoji without touch keyboards, though:
The :emoji: convention from GitHub and now Slack, the turn-words-into-emoji thing from iOS (requires touch, but doesn't have to), the
emoticon-to-emoji conversion. So I don't know if touch keyboards were truly necessary. Maybe @iamcal knows?
