That might have accessibility/latency/internationalization implications, though. I can see why the went this way.

And it’s fair to be annoyed by aliasing and aspire to do better, but that might be orthogonal to their CSS skill set.

(I think possibly half pixels might make this smoother in CSS? Unsure if they're supported widely at this point.)
