Considering the lack of an alternate scrolling mechanism, it's more about re-using proven interface genres than skeuomorphism.https://twitter.com/mwichary/status/822563076792872962 …

How do you define the difference between the two things you juxtaposed?

skeuomorphism has a slippery definition in tech as it usually just means visual metaphor, not "real" skeuomorphism.

additionally, the wheel apparently actually scrolls the page. So: not skeuomorphism.

To me, that actually *is* skeuomorphic: instead of being abstracted away, it resembles something known (physical).

correct, if it no longer performs the function. Like the emulation of wood joinery in stone buildings.

it appears to be an actual wheel with which one scrolls the page up and down, and borrows a format that typists would likely know.

Oh, interesting. I don’t think it is necessary for it to be non-functional to be a skeuomorph, but I can see that logic also.

it comes down to what we mean by the terms. "Skeuomorphism" means different things to different people.
