This kind of stuff bothers me. I love “smart”/proper/typographical quotation marks for (at least) three reasons:

1. Smart quotes are beautiful. Look at “smart” and how the quotation marks hold the word together in place.

About 30 yrs ago I encountered a system where you weren't allowed to be called O'Neil or O'Bryan; quote mark is "not alphabetic"!
