For my name day, I’d appreciate any donation you can give to @fairfightaction. Bonus №1: I will match donations up to $1,000 – pls share a screenshot! Bonus №2: I will assign you a name day if you don’t have one already. What is a name day? Thread:https://secure.actblue.com/donate/fair-fight-1 …

I come from Poland, and my upbringing afforded me a bunch of once-strictly-Catholic, now largely-secularized traditions. One of them is having a saint attached to your name. Mine is, somewhat predictably, Saint Martin.

Each saint has a birthday, a day of some sort of a celebration, or a day of death or burial – in general, a day of certain significance. The calendar day of significance for your saint becomes your name day… and mine is today, on November 11.

Stripped of the religion and the history (we’ll come back to this), a name day in modern times becomes simply… a second birthday. It’s treated pretty much identically: you celebrate, you have a party, you get gifts. But it’s actually better than a birthday.

First of all, since it’s not actually your birthday, a name day feels kinder – it’s not attached to your age getting incremented by one; it comes without too many worries of having wasted yet another year achieving nothing.

Second of all, there isn’t just one Saint Martin. As a matter of fact, there were many! So is the case for other popular names, as they come with a bunch of saints each.

Many saints means choice: my name comes with eight different name day options! Sure, traditionally you‘re supposed to pick the first one after your birthday, but who’s going to complain if you chose a different one?

It gets better. Nobody will really fact check your particular saint *at all* – so you can just choose a random calendar day for your name day! Do it far away from your birthday, Christmas, summer, whatever you want.

So! A name day is basically flawless – all the good parts of the birthday and none of the bad ones. But my personal name day is even better for a few more reasons:

First of all, November 11 is attached to the famous Martin of Tours, one of Catholic Church’s biggest celebrities: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_of_Tours …pic.twitter.com/S9DRu2bkek

Martin of Tours is so famous he comes with many classic stories: how he gave half of his cloak to a beggar who supposedly was Jesus himself, or how some stupid loud geese gave his location away and that’s how he became a bishop (don’t ask me).pic.twitter.com/RT2Vgsv3yH

And Martin of Tours also has streets named after him in a bunch of Polish cities, a fireworks display in at least one of them, and throughout a swath of Poland, a special type of a poppyseed-filled croissant with his name on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Martin%27s_croissant …pic.twitter.com/26vg7sO9Kr

(In order for a poppyseed croissant to be named “saint Martin’s,” the bakery has to be certified and only about a hundred of them have the rights to do so.

Stuff’s getting pretty competitive in some parts of Poland, with a few bakeries even having lost their licenses because they were revealed to use butter instead of margarine! Scandal!

Also, the non-certified bakeries offer lookalikes anyway, which means that in November, you can also find a bootleg croissant with a beautiful name of “Almost Martin’s.”

Also also, remember the loud geese etc.? For that reason eating geese is a traditional thing to do on November 11. An old saying goes “Dzień św. Marcina dużo gęsi zarzyna” – “a lot of geese get slaughtered on Saint Martin’s Day.” I’m not even making this up.)

Anyway! Martin of Tours was buried on November 11, 397. But one-and-a-half millennia later, the same calendar day came to signify a much more important moment: the end of World War I.

For Poland, the Armistice Day of 1918 was also the end of a century-old annexation by Prussia + Russia + The Habsburg Empire, and the country’s reemergence as an independent state. In other words, November 11 is Poland’s Independence Day.

So, just by coincidence, I lucked into the best name day. Ever year I get a second birthday with gifts/cake/celebration, a baked good popular enough to have many imitations, a delicious geese dish if I choose to – and all of that happening on a school/work-free day to boot.

To add insult to the injury, Saint Martin is popular around the world, so today November 11 is observed in many more countries than Poland (for example The Netherlands has its own mini Halloween that day)… but not in America: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Martin%27s_Day …
