While we're on this topic... @figmadesign any updates on the roadmap to support variable fonts?
They're an essential part to make future web typography better. Figma should be leading the way here.

Seriously! I know they are disabling Variable fonts in their app this week because of support issues for families like SF Pro that is now full variable. With Apple, Google, and many other providers moving this direction I'm shocked that Figma isn't stepping up in this department.

But what are your specific use cases? Optical size for all text everywhere, automatically? Grade for dark mode? Expressive axes for branding? Tweaking weight on hover? Fitting text into a box by reducing the width axis just enough? https://twitter.com/mwichary/status/1311366695588524033?s=19 … wants to know :)

Those are helpful, but they are not specific. :·) Sorry, not being facetious. I hear you and your tweets are helping. The VF support will happen. (But it doesn’t feel accurate to say we are removing support this week. We did never have any to begin with.)

That's fair. I didn't mean to place blame, I was merely trying to convey that a solution was in the works to disable locally-installed variable fonts (which is a short term fix but not necessarily a step toward variable support). Sorry for implying you were removing something...

More design systems (SF Pro, SF Symbols, Google) are using variable fonts in implementing UI and it would be wonderful to have Figma support this. That being said, I know the effort is monumental and your team has already achieved so much in the way of robust OpenType support.

Yeah, we’re looking at this much more seriously now that we see beginnings of actual production use of VF to complement experimentation. For us it’s a combination of product and tech challenges, but I hope to have something more concrete to say not far from now.

Appreciate the reply. Again, I'm sorry for the pile on. That wasn't fair. Your tool and team are incredible. I've interviewed with ~20 tech companies (early stage to enterprise) in the past months and every single one of them use and praise Figma. We couldn't do this without you.

Appreciate your thoughtfulness, but let’s not swing too far in the other direction. :·) We’re building a product, and a product that’s meant to solve real-life problems. Keep us accountable!

If you‘re frustrated/disappointed by lack of VF, that’s a good signal for us. Unfortunately, we have to balance it with all sorts of other internal and external frustrations and disappointments, but that’s our job. :·)
