While we're on this topic... @figmadesign any updates on the roadmap to support variable fonts?
They're an essential part to make future web typography better. Figma should be leading the way here.

There’s a chicken & egg problem at hand—type foundries have created plenty of variable fonts, but digital design tools (aside from actual browsers) are lagging behind. Without the tools, users can!t really be interested in the fonts and won’t create sites and apps with them.
-
It would be great to include them throughout Figma, including interactivity in prototypes, but just being able to create / use instances from axes within VAR fonts would be a big step forward.

Variable fonts seem particularly suited to responsive design in Figma. Being able to dial in the optical size/width/weight makes adjustments across viewports and dark mode more granular without having to rely on existing instances. Would love it!

From a type design point of view, I'm wondering if we're moving away from providing instances and instead providing a design space for the typographer to play with. VF designs have good bits between set instances so you need to be able to dig in.

I frequently work with small type in tight spaces so the ability to optimize legibility through finer variable controls is very important to me. This is as true for my work designing watches in Figma as it is when I designing for mobile and web. Happy to chat more about this!

Looks like there’s a Figma variable font plugin in the works, by
@rememberlenny : https://www.figma.com/community/file/841567018431192369 … and I may have seen a demo/beta version of a Figma with native (non-plugin) variable font support, but not sure the status on that one. Perhaps@negativespaceca knows? -
Variable support plugin should be done by next month!

Hi Marcin, I think the use cases are immense. Recently I was involved in a major rebranding and design system project wherein. The major limitation of using VF is the support for it on
@figmadesign. If you say that it's not an issue and just use static fonts for now and later... -
replace them with VF. This is not feasible since there is a huge licensing cost involved. If we buy static fonts for now for and org and later shift to VF it will cost double. Hence we had to drop the possibility of using VF even though we know how much savings we can do in terms

Variable fonts are really nice for logos & graphic design, for instance in badge-like arrangements where you might want to exactly balance the stroke weights between different sizes of type.
