My friend @jfuchs inspired me recreating a wild touch screen keyboard from a 1989 Buick Renatta car, just so I could put it in my book.

So funny to see UI engineers struggling with text input even back then. TVs and other appliances haven’t really moved the ball forward much from here.
It’s basically a draw with entering my WiFi SSID in my Sony Blu-Ray player.
This one is not as bad if so. I can imagine you moving faster if you master it and if you use two hands. Here’s a device with a very similar concept that was marketed as a serious data entry method.pic.twitter.com/S2qwcF7u6y
I *do* wonder what would be the best keyboard here, given the limitations.
What’s so fascinating to me on the Reatta is that it NEARLY doesn’t have them. Think about it. If there’s touch, just show QWERTY? Obviously the touch resolution wasn’t there yet.
Yeah. I’m guessing QWERTY and without shifts (just press X times, wait for advance) could be nicer. Or a straight up T9 – but that costs money.
Case is a luxury I’m not expecting in a situation like this. I think they did a great job given the limitations, I’d would KILL to find out what they were really working with on the tech. What an awesome proto-problem to solve!
The first mass electronic UI for cars I’m aware of was hybrids like the Prius—then I think harder and I definitely remember other early-90s Buicks with LED displays. I wonder if this was typical for that make, even outside of concepts and rarer models?
