Hofstadter did some work on font generation. It’s not quite a thing but an interesting topic. Eg https://bair.berkeley.edu/blog/2018/03/13/mcgan/ … Dwarf Fortress because for many years it was only officially released as a text-based game. I think the devs very recently added graphics.
There’s a pretty cool history of text-based games, including those where the glyphs themselves play a significant role. Another (older) example would be nethack.
