The more UX folk I talk to, from many companies, the more it feels that deep, longer term UX improvements are often below corporate goals. It's hard to justify with resources spread so thin.

I've been in this business long enough to deeply understand 'the business of design': I get it, you have to prioritize, resources are limited, etc. I'm not faulting anyone.

But at some point, corporate UX feels like an extension of advertising, it's only goal is to sell this year's product, not create longer term improvements. There is little incentive.

University research and FOSS each have their issues but at least they invert these incentives. They are a bit more open to crazy, longer term ideas.

This isn't a screed against any company. They all show signs of this. I guess I'm just feeling more reflective these days given, well, everything.

Is it possible to do our jobs AND think longer term? I don't know. This thread is rather vague, sorry, I'm just blurting this into the void, hoping others feel similarly and are willing to help me cohere this into something more articulate.
