The terms "Non-West" & "Non-Western" are reductive, lazy, &--to state the obvious--Eurocentric. ID-ing the majority of the planet's peoples, geographies, cultures, histories, languages, and objects by what they are _not_ advances a colonial mindset. (Yup, this is a subtweet.)

Reminds me of the debate about “non-Latin” type design.

As if to demonstrate a reductive, frankly colonial attitude, Figma decided to use the phrase 'non-English languages': https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040449673 …. They're actually talking about scripts of course. And they wrote 'Nato' instead of 'Noto'.

Geez! Ugh. Did you mention it to them or file a “bug”?

I didn't quite know what to do, except just really hate it.

Thanks! I will pass this along. But I think “language” feels more appropriate than “script” in this context – seems easier to understand for people who aren’t professionals, and also allows to get into nuances of languages that all use Latin script.
