For all the font foundries or type designers wondering how best to make sure their fonts behave well in @figmadesign, I just published a small guide on how Figma uses font metrics. Let me know if I missed anything important!https://www.figma.com/community/file/838187493478834415 …

I’ve always wodnered whether people know they should load webfonts into figma since often Desktop fonts and Webfonts might have different metrics

How do you mean? Can you explain “loading web fonts into Figma”?

Some foundries provide fonts with metrics specifically optimised for desktop apps (Adobe, Office, etc), and also webfonts optimised for web environments as they both interpret it differently. See for example the different strategies herehttps://glyphsapp.com/tutorials/vertical-metrics …

I understand that part, but I was curious how you get Figma to use web fonts rather than desktop fonts?

oh sorry, so I’d just suggest loading the webfonts, I don’t know how Figma handles fonts but can it use webfonts in the design environment?

I don’t think it is possible without a lot of hacking and converting. I know there is sometimes a discrepancy between desktop and web, but in practice I don’t think I’ve heard any complaints.

I see, so it’s not an environment that can use a woff then? I’ve heard a few complaints from people who had extremely exacting needs for aligning objects but it’s not common

Yeah, it’s a bit complex. Even though a Figma uses web technologies, in terms of fonts it behaves more like a regular desktop app. It just reads fonts off of your local computer.
