Thanks! I’m having a bit of trouble seeing the result of use typo metrics across apps. Weird question, but can you by any chance point to a font that has Use Typo Metrics enabled that I could use as for testing?

Thanks for this. Just to clarify: for this fonts, the metrics seem identical across three options, is that correct? (total: 2457)

The total height (including line height) is the same, but the distribution is different.pic.twitter.com/wwd4i0nCd5

Ok. Thanks for bearing with me. I clarified that Figma does not use useTypoMetrics, and updated the instructions to mention this.

When it comes to changing that, this is a bit tricky since I’d be worried about existing fonts in Figma files possibly moving vertically as a result, which would be a huge nuisance.

So I think what would help is either seeing particular problems arise for our users (where we could even whitelist particular fonts), or strong examples of where we anticipate this might cause problems.

I will update our internal documentation with our conversation here so that we have more context in the future.

Sounds good! I don’t think it is necessarily a problem how Figma wants to go about picking these values. I just think, especially as shown in your graphic, that relying on the hhea values will result in even more inconsistent baseline alignment than otherwise.

Sorry, if you wouldn’t mind bearing with me: could you explain this issue to me in more detail, perhaps using a specific font as an example?

(This issue being how would that lead to more inconsistent baseline alignment.)
