Is there a way to open links without using the tooltip? I.g. word/powerpoint has "ctrl-click"

Unfortunately, we’re kinda out of modifier keys at this point. :·)

Seems like you could do something for when nothing is selected. ⌘/Ctrl+Shift+Click? Or Space+Shift+Click?

Yeah, the worry is that those combinations can also appear in normal use (⌘ + ⇧ = add another item via deep click), and the misclick cost is so high here. I’ll admit I don’t know a solution yet. I just know many apps are doing it wrong, and I want to avoid their pitfalls.

Keep the current implementation and add an option to "direct-click" to preferences?

We tried a few of those permutations locally and in beta testing. Alas, all of them led to jarring, unexpected (and disruptive) link follows during other operations, even if you were 100% aware and onboard with direct clicking.

Hmm. I know I'll eventually get used to it, my concern is smoothing out the process of teaching clients to get used to it... BUT we'll find out as time goes I guess!
