I just learned that I have exactly 180 of Stanisław Lem’s books. (Lem’s bibliography is only about 40 volumes, but even though my collection spans 9 languages, the distribution is lopsided – there are at least three editions of each book in Polish here.)pic.twitter.com/u1iyaloDn3

Some of them are signed, and I saw all of them being signed, including that one time that I showed up at Lem’s doorstep in Cracow as a kid. It was a weird thing to do. I don’t regret it.pic.twitter.com/NOBns8A7mg

ALERT ALERT ALERT Six of Stanisław Lem’s books – including the excellent “Return from the stars,” “The Invincible” (first proper direct translation ever!) and “His master’s voice” – are being reissued by MIT Press. https://mitpress.mit.edu/contributors/stanislaw-lem … *instantly orders two of each* pic.twitter.com/DFJ3RwQeI5

Oh, you know how I learned where he lived? I went to a post office, grabbed a Kraków phone book, looked up everyone with the last name “Lem,” and then just visited all these (4) places. (Later I realized it was kind of the reverse of The Terminator.)

Then on our family trip to Kraków I just removed half the clothes from my backpack without telling my mom, and replaced them with all the 7 of Lem’s books I had at that point. (I still have all of them except a copy of “Eden,” which I gave to someone I loved.)
