Question for tech twitter: When did databases move from storing alphanumeric records to more complex (binary) forms of digital objects (images, audio, video, etc.) Was there a watershed moment we can date or a first-of-its-kind system or product?

Not sure whether you are asking about desktop or enterprise, but FileMaker had image storage capability pretty early.
