Question for tech twitter: When did databases move from storing alphanumeric records to more complex (binary) forms of digital objects (images, audio, video, etc.) Was there a watershed moment we can date or a first-of-its-kind system or product?

Matt, might be worth taking a look at Ampex on this topic. Their early work on using video for data storage (videofile), which led to the Oracle project, and then Oracle, might provide context. Later, of course, Ampex produced and lived off IP related to video/date storage.
