Book idea: This thread, as a recursive book. History of tech through its words. You start with a word derived from old technology (e.g. “dialing”), and explain it. That definition uses words derived from *older* technologies, and you have to do it again.https://twitter.com/mwichary/status/1079608499083059200 …

I wonder sometimes what would be the oldest extant word based on technology no longer in use. Taping an interview? Dialing someone? https://twitter.com/hels/status/679059633949011970 …

Say hello to the Ultra-Force numbering device. It seems like a regular rotary stamp. You can rotate the digits to whatever number you want by hand if you want to. But that extruded typeset numero is not a weird accident. pic.twitter.com/fAabIoKnCj

For example, the Dutch write “2 t/m 8,” which stands for “tot en met,” or “up to and including.” It’s kind of like a smarter range hyphen – so useful to avoid confusion, and you see it everywhere.

The first thing that comes to mind is Biting the Wax Tadpole by Elizabeth Little, but I don't think I've seen that particular Dutch example in anything. Of course, there are a bajillion things like that that no one sees as unusual until someone does
