Nostalgia... We used Volkov Commander thought. Looked almost identically but written fully in assembly: takes only 40KB of space and was much faster than NC - big deal if you're using 8088 CPU and 720KB 5.25" diskettes.

Anyway, still using only these kind of 2-pane file managers: Volkov Commander -> Total Commander -> Double Commander. All because of how fast you get used to it and how productive you'd be...
