Probably to house their PCBs. PCBs are flat and components used to be bigger and more numerous back then.
my assumption is because the computer "mainboard" and the ccd+ optical assembly couldn't be miniaturized enough to jig-saw into the familiar DSLR form factor. like it some was internal topological hurdle
probably a good way to incorporate a large one-piece Mainboard and a bunchof optics in a handy shape (and a magnetic disc was square anyways)
also that Quicktake probably contains a lot of glass and definitely contains a bunch of batteries
But that could fit vertically into more traditional camera bodies?
Looks like a nice ergonomic choice in a world where viewfinders are used for framing, not screens.
They definitely look as if they may be trying to evoke the Minox camera on the front.
