Chrissean asked me to do an anime-inspired shoot, which is a bit outside my normal range, but I was intrigued! And then he showed up with this amazing coat and I knew I had to try a shortlight setup

Shortlighting is a lighting technique that uses the key (main) light on the back of the face (short side). Most headshots or portraits are broadlit, meaning the key light is on the broadest part of the face

Broadlight is typically what I use for most professional style portraits. You want to flatter the subject and showcase their face

Shortlight plays with shadows. It’s very dramatic looking, and can be slightly harsher, depending on the subject’s skin and how they’re positioned. I bumped up the clarity on this set when post processing because I wanted to get a really grainy and gritty feel

While this isn’t my typical style, I absolutely loved playing with darker, more dramatic lighting! I even got it right on the first pass, which is basically like writing code and all your tests passing the first time 😊
