So all ya FB haters who apparently I follow here on the Twitter, legitimately and honestly: Can you help me understand why you hate FB so much? What am I missing? (If you can, please provide references to big claims :–)

It holds a mirror up to society and people don't like what they see. Then blame the mirror.

Facebook cannot be just a mirror – the technology and its effects are simply too complex for that. Here are some examples:

Right, it’s not a perfect mirror. I think it might be the highest fidelity one we ever had. I certainly think that the broadcast era had more warping, because the Cronkites edited it for a narrative. Now question: is it good to have a better mirror? I don’t know that.

Okay, so it’s not perfect. So maybe the blame is deserved after all? I think you’re not noticing how your original soundbite’y tweet might actually be offending people whose livelihoods were damaged or destroyed by Facebook’s irresponsible decision-making.

It’s hard for me to imagine going to Myanmar and saying “Facebook is just a mirror that showed you how awful you were all along,” given Facebook people themselves admitted their platform was a catalyst.

Or, closer to home, many great journalists who were laid off because Facebook lied about video metrics.

Applying whataboutism to go back to television era is not that useful, given this: https://twitter.com/mwichary/status/1188218373403893760?s=21 … The stakes are higher now.

          6. Lastly, we know that the stakes are higher – viral spread of information and hyperconnectedness present profound dangers to societies in ways we didn’t experience before, and ones that trend negative if unchecked (e.g. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/25/world/asia/facebook-extremism.html …)
