It's easier with some words than with other. Cat is a particularly good example because of the plethora of base words: кот
кошка
котенок (kitten)
киса (
, affectionate)

My experience so far is that there are 50 *extremely specific* words for all possible variations of the thing, like there'll be a word for "strolling past your pal Dave on a Tuesday afternoon" that's different from the one you'd use when Dave is also strolling the other direction
