Figure out what he is running on the screen — ask Atari 800 experts like @KevinSavetz. It almost looks like a Videotex client (although I doubt it)
That may give you some idea of what it was trying to advertise. And that crazy poster on the wall might be a clue
The suggestion of asking Kevin was going to be my next suggestion.
Sweet! Here’s the unmodified photo I found: https://aresluna.org/kidwith800xl.jpg … I don’t think there’s any metadata inside…
I blew it up a little and lightened up some of the details on the off chance it would help. One detail is that the skis are made by Hart, a major manufacturer. I wonder if it could be from something like a Sears catalog?pic.twitter.com/0brx6L4U06
Here’s a lead: This 1984 Computer Palace catalog seems to have multiple shots taken at a similar desk with the same TV set. https://archive.org/details/ComputerPalaceCatalogSpring1984/ …pic.twitter.com/50p14LT8Qp
Whoa, whoa!!! Amazing.
So there’s your lead—sometime around 1984, in catalogs for Atari goods.
Here it is!!! Cropped, but here: https://archive.org/details/ComputerPalaceCatalogSpring1984/page/n27 …
The question is whether these are their photos, or whether they were Atari’s official photos just given to distributors/resellers to aid with this kind of stuff.
My guess is the latter, based on the fact their 1983 catalog looks nothing like this. Glad to help!
This was amazing, thanks!!!!!
