There's a bunch of Lego clones; some even interoperated with the Lego parts. Lego won because their manufacturing quality was significantly better. Also better and established marketing.

Loc Blocs had huge bumps and were inferior plastic... kind of brittle. (I actually had a box before I had any Lego.)
