The straight bars on the right side in picture two look like something which would trigger at different points like selecting a digit to increment.
That spingamathing projecting from the corner in picture 1 looks like something that might be attached to a crank or belt, to actuate the mechanism when something happens. (Customer passes through the front door, cow passes through a chute, etc.)
