i know some systems had just a handful of tab positions, eg "no indent", "indent 1", "indent 2", not tabs every n chars (eg n=8). those positions may have been encoded into software that expected text at specific pos, eg assemblers, but we may be talking about time before asm

I'm pretty sure the Teletype Model 33 didn't have hardware tabs. The Model 35 did, but it sounds like they were manually set at arbitrary positions, like on a typewriter https://archive.org/details/bitsavers_teletype35n73_11137720/page/n111 …
