Yep -- holds the tape slack down over the heads. That might be slightly incorrect. Am I getting this right @kenshirriff?
Yes, the columns hold slack because the tape starts and stops rapidly moved over the head by the capstan, while the reels have inertia and could snap the tape. There are two vacuum sensors in each column detecting the tape. Too much or too little and the reel spins to adjust.
