I would assume IBM Executive from the appearance, but I don't know the chronology well enough to know if that's realistic. And good point about Remington probably not wanting to patronize the competition!

It appears that Remington released the Statesman typewriter with proportional spacing in 1956, so they could have chosen to use it for this in 1958

Yes, almost certainly IBM Executive. Identical typeface to my high school newspaper. Justification was a tedious process of typing the lines, counting leftover space at end of each line, then retyping it, distributing thin spaces between words to reach right margin.
