I've been curious about Hellschreiber machines for a long time, but I think this is the first time I've seen one in person or touched one!

Was it running? As far as I remember you had to type to the rhythm of the mechanism?

I think it was running earlier in the day, but I arrived late this year because of reasons. The guy displaying it was very happy to open it up for me to take pictures of the insides. He knew I've been interested in them for a long time. He won't be at the show tomorrow, though.

Are there any other places/meet-ups in the area with more stuff like this?

The Estrella Warbirds Museum is worth visiting on its own merits, and they do have radio stuff on display. Some of the radio nerds also go to military vehicle meets like Camp Delta. I don't know what's up in the bay area, but some of our members are from there.

If you are (or would like to become) a ham radio operator, our group runs a weekly radio net on Saturdays (not including this one because of the meet): http://www.mrcgwest.org/mrcg-radio-nets/ … We're not the only military radio enthusiast group; other groups in the midwest and east coast.

I was primarily excited to see all the teletype/teleprinter/Hellschreiber keyboards, and hopefully take some nice photos. (I actually have a callsign! But I never used it and forgot it.

I haven't visited the USS Pampanito, but at least one of our members is/was involved with it, I think: https://maritime.org/tour/radio.php?pano=nr …

You can join our email list if you would like (it's pretty low traffic). There's also the ArmyRadios Yahoo group, the Greenkeys mailing list for general teletype interest, and others. Then once you fall down the rabbit hole, we'll introduce you to the CryptoCollectors list... ;)
