reminds me of when I pass some older school or community buildings here in Toronto, and there are remnants of signage indicating both a "Mens/Boys" and Women/Girls separate entrances.

Are these on houses? So maybe equivalent to "deliveries" (of milk, coal, etc.). But either way, there's probably some history in why SF standardized on those "tradesmen" signs.

Reminds me of the doco by Jon Ronson about Kubrick's boxes. Stanley had his nephew photograph thousands of doors to find the right door for use in a scene in Eyes Wide Shut. "It was a good year".
