Why wouldn’t you want a design tool to render type EXACTLY like a browser/os? As a designer who works closely with devs every day I’d love my design tool to mimic whatever the final product will be housed in. Would help a ton with handoff/going over values.

It is definitely a big discussion, but I can try to offer a few thoughts:

1. There are many browsers/OSs, in many versions, on many types of screens. I don’t think it’s possible for the tool to even keep up, outside of even the UI issues. Let’s say Firefox 62 has a line height bug. What do you do in this situation…?

2. Browsers/OSs font rendering is not documented well, so “exactly” is never really possible.

3. Designers are different, designs go in different places, hand-offs work differently in different places, etc. I don’t think I’d want to assume they’re all like you (or me). :·)

4. The design side and engineering side don’t match exactly in terms of automation… Let’s pick one specific example – the web’s propensity to add letter spacing to the last letter.

I observed almost no one wants that. This is really easy to solve on the eng side by tooling, JS, CSS class, etc. But it’d be frustrating to have to fix on the design side, manually, every single time you want to center text, by changing letter spacing of the last letter to 0.

There are a few more answers, but I think these are enough for me to believe you can *not* have some level of abstraction. Whether we arrived at a good one? Send us feedback what doesn’t work, and we’ll revisit. :·)

Lastly, our Code panel is supposed to help with hand-off and do some necessary translation. If it fails in that, please tell us how!

Thanks for running through those additional examples of your rationale! I’m personally always looking for ways to make the process of design => dev more efficient and seamless, so I greatly appreciate the work you’ve done with this update.

Sure, and please let us know what could be better!
