We’re altering the way we handle text in Figma. To find the right solution, @mwichary dove into the beautifully complex history of type and vertical alignment. More here:https://buff.ly/2XPfVUn

Amazing work! Curious, instead of finding a happy middle ground, would you consider having an option on the document settings: Mimic Web? That way if you’re working for the web, you can choose “Mimic Web” and the type can mimic all the things that browsers do to type?

We considered this, but this felt tricky because it would add complexity to both the product and the UI, and also because it would put pressure on the designer to become familiar with all the nuances of type rendering on all the platforms.

If you were a designer working concurrently on designs for iOS and web, I think it would be really confusing to see the rendering change under you, or the UI become a facsimile of the platform (a.k.a. https://aresluna.org/line-height-playground/ …).

I think there are plenty designers who would know the difference. Especially if you pop a modal saying “you’re about to change how text is rendered”. Personally I’d LOVE the design app to mimic the platform. Otherwise there is inconsistency between mock and implementation.
