(@WideSpacer will be happy with *four* spaces after the full stop.)
Fantastic find! I don't see the curly quotes, though. What am I missing?
They are not in this letter. I’m saying that the curliness of the single quote is consistent with the curly double quotes on the same typewriter.
I did find other letters from the same model (?) with curly double quotes, too!pic.twitter.com/g7UzVE1NUg
*And* I found this amazing early letter written on a Sholes & Glidden. All high-res scans in public domain. What a good day!pic.twitter.com/UbxvSZRvSq
Thank you! Great to see what the curly quotes looked like
I wish we could know what was the story there! It seemed like for a few years the typewriters were on their way to better typography… but then it all snapped back.
Was there competition that had # and %, and Remington had to have them too to avoid losing business?
It’s my understanding Remington was never really under any real threat until way later (from Underwood and so on). They were flying solo for very long, and developed a great sales force.
But it’s possible that the business needs won over any way. Maybe people just complained about the lack of those symbols?
