The unplaned type is a semi-bad idea even then! It would wear your type or even potentially break it, or damaged your tympan drawsheet (not expensive, but still a pain to load and get packed properly).

Haven’t had much luck with finding the example of “r.” in the wild, but I found a 1886 letter from someone who really wanted that key.pic.twitter.com/GIYIXWmk0j

That is incredibly impressive that you found this! Superscripts were very common in sign painting and I guess handwriting, but they were a huge pain and rarely used in typesetting.

(by rarely, I mean that fonts of type didn't typically include superscripts, so it would be a specialized and irritating thing to include them in hand setting)

OH MY GOD. I think I found it. Date checks out. Note the curved apostrophe consistent with the legend on the key on the above typewriter, and with the presence of two curved quotation marks, too. Best news: Public domain.pic.twitter.com/gGGeNQ96FQ

(@WideSpacer will be happy with *four* spaces after the full stop.)

Fantastic find! I don't see the curly quotes, though. What am I missing?

They are not in this letter. I’m saying that the curliness of the single quote is consistent with the curly double quotes on the same typewriter.
