So to recap: US – mail is left in a box by the side of the street UK – post is decorated with portrait of the Queen, popped into a metal tube marked with the Queen’s cypher and then collected by the Royal Mail Rest of world – no idea

In my 40+ years of watching UK movies and television programmes, it had never never never risen to my consciousness that letters have to be posted into boxes.

Depending on the contents of your letter, letting a letter leave your hand and drop into a postbox can be one of life's most dramatic acts - however quiet or insignificant it might appear for an onlooker.
