Creating a great PowerPoint deck is a real challenge. And not because the software is clunky. It's so difficult to tell a clear, coherent story. So hard to avoid robotic bullet-point speak and to talk to your audience like they're humans.

Whenever I coach someone through a presentation, I get them to write the story first. Then onto post its (one idea per post it), then we map to slides. So often people start by building the presentation deck, which creates the robotic and dense talk of which you speak.

I think making the deck feels like more of a "clear actionable task" for me, which is how I fall into the trap too.

I often scratch that itch (needing to feel productive/to change gears) by focusing on the visual style of the deck, or finessing one important slide – but the whole structure of the slide deck doesn’t come together until much later.
