This is AMAZING. Thank you very much! I'll have to put together a smileys-on-typewriters post as a follow-up to the emoji series.

There was also a rare third-party Selectric ball with a smiley constructed of two halves. Let me know and I’ll send you more info about it.

I took a Selectric in for service, and the repair guy mentioned that this existed. I wasn't sure if this was something that had been around for a while or had been created (3D-printed?) more recently.

(There is a "cult of the Selectric" I guess, but I don't know if it's serious enough to have inspired new custom typeballs.)

I know of (one) 3D printing attempt: http://3dprintingindustry.com/news/dot-san-partners-artist-ehryn-torrel-3d-print-beautiful-memory-33052/ … …but the typeball I was thinking of was a genuine product.

From a company named GP: Sunshine Script or Sunshine Orator. The catalogue is from 3/86pic.twitter.com/5BeA1WY7by

I thought I had a photo of that ball, with a split face, but I think I must have imagined it. Anyway, this is already highlighting a problem with smileys/emoji – their proportions don’t quite fit classic type. It’s still a problem today with setting them alongside regular text.

I wonder if that repair guy meant the same ball!

That's probably the one. And it makes sense that it would be GP, they were the most prominent (as far as I know) aftermarket typeball maker.
